iPhone 2d Barcode Ticket Scanner

For those of you who visit this web site especially for iPhone 2d Barcode news, I am posting this one just for you. In my never-ending search for development of use of 2d barcodes, I came across a post on Skycore’s code READr app designed to turn the iPhone camera into a barcode document scanning app for iphone, and real-time validation of people’s printed and mobile tickets, which they are promoting, along with a web services platform, to ticketing companies, venues and event holders. After reading the post and thinking I might do a quick write up, I realised the site I was on was – yet again – the Barcode News site: This site is proving to be entirely worthy of its compound title, being about barcodes and always with good news! So well done again guys, more link juice coming your way!

Scanning 2d Barcodes: iPhone

Hey, I know I’ve already written my obligatory 2d barcode trends for 2011 post, but I just read a post over at the ShareSquare blog entitled ‘Will 2011 be the year QR codes explode in the USA?‘ which goes into far more detail and expands on many of the issues I mentioned. Take a look, it’s a great read.

The writer suggests there is about a 50/50 split in market share between smartphones and feature phones, with the iPhone and G1 as the main representatives of smartphones in the US, but that smartphones, and therefore 2d mobile phone technology, are set to overtake the feature phone market in 2011.

2d barcode technology in Japan was able penetrate the market far quicker, simply because the market was dominated by one wireless carrier which decided to support the technology. In the Us, and the west in general, this simply couldn’t happen and so the uptake has been far slower. But the writer suggests that since mobile operating systems have now become the new ‘gatekeepers of handset functionality’ there are a whole bunch of barcode scanning apps entering the market.

2D Barcode Trends in 2011

Coming into the new year, 2d barcode technology is still a fledgling industry by comparison with its predecessors. There are many avenues open to development, and while a number of businesses and organisations are testing it out in various ways, it has yet to become fully mainstream. As the year progresses I will keep you updated with new uses for 2d barcode technology, and new users.

This is a difficult industry to predict upon in the short term, in many ways it’s easy enough to see where the development is likely to happen based on current circumstances, but whether or not this technology is picked up in large numbers or spread widely fast enough is a large factor.

Looking at past innovation in this area, I would expect major developments in the advertising and marketing spheres. But this is dependent, of course, on both the advertisers using 2d barcodes, and the public having access to 2d barcode scanners. With this under consideration, I believe the breakthrough will come as more and more mobile phones come into the market with 2d barcode scanning technology preloaded.
